Gown Tutorial

Description

Here's how I make (most) of my gowns. Sometimes I use different methods, depending on the gown and its details.

It's a long process of adding layers and stuff. Some gowns can take me more than 1 week to make. And that 1 week is ONLY for ONE gown. If the picture has 2 characters and both are wearing something detailed, the the making process is longer.

Most people ask me how I make the folds on gowns. My answer is to simply observe fabrics, how the fall and how the crumple. Look at pictures. Consult Google, seriously. Type in Google search "wedding gowns, prom gowns, bridesmaids' dresses, kaftans, saris...", anything that has a lot of fabric and it falls to the ground. Look at those pictures. Sketch from those pictures.

Most of the patterns I use in my gowns are made by me. Sometimes the design of the pattern might not be completely my own, it might be something I've seen on internet (again, try Google) and liked it. BUT not matter what pattern it is, I almost always re-draw it, change it a bit, and re-colour it to my liking before using it. Hence, I've accumulated a growing stash of patterns and designs that I've saved as PNG files and then can use at any time in any picture I want. And I like making patterns.

Anyways, the above gown has currently 110 layers in all. And this is after I've merged some layers to help my drawing program save better. If there are too many layers, the saving process can take up to 10 minutes sometimes, and occasionally the drawing program can also crash without saving... And when that happens, I launch into orbit cursing the whole universe.

I'll post this gown soon, after I've done the background. :D (Big Grin)
